The new, modern and high-quality boutique Hotel Indigo York, awarded Best Boutique Hotel North Yorkshire 2016, Best IHG Hotel 2016 and Visit York Tourism Award 2017, is situated on one of the oldest streets in York, in the heart of our neighbourhood of Walmgate.

It has 101 new, modern and high-quality boutique guest rooms, designed to reflect the rich chocolate heritage of Rowntree and Terry’s of York and the city’s stonework. On our walls, our guests can look for references to this important history in chocolate production, as well as family names, printed on our bedside lamps, of the people who lived on this street, centuries ago.

Head Chef

Hotel Indigo York are looking for a Head Chef that can lead from the front in this hands on role, and bring a huge amount of passion, energy and organisation to the kitchen.  In return you will have the autonomy to create menus, and work for a fantastic brand and company that encourages locally inspired ideas, and creative approaches.

Position Purpose

As Head Chef at the Hotel Indigo York, you need to be the leader in the Kitchen Team in order to deliver high quality food with high quality service and customer satisfaction results.  You will need to have a hands-on approach, with the ability to work as part of the team and engage all the team members to work as one team.  You will have autonomy to be creative and be expected to comply with brand standards and operating procedures

Key Responsibilities

  • Day to day training and guidance to team members
  • Detailed daily handovers and expectations of the business
  • Daily ordering keeping within budgeted cost guidelines
  • Daily monitoring and recording of all Health and Safety expectations
  • Daily monitoring and guidance on kitchen cleanliness
  • Producing timely rotas within budgeted payroll targets
  • Attending the morning briefings to discuss the day ahead
  • Holding departmental monthly meetings
  • Checking food quality standards daily and feeding back to the team
  • Management of all allergen training and allergen food information linked to menus
  • Ensuring staff food is cooked and prepared in a timely manner, and within budgeted food costs

Person Specification

1. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Preferred –

  • Food Hygiene level 3,
  • Experience working with online procurement systems,
  • Managing a kitchen team of over 5 team members

Exceptional –

  • Food quality and presentation,
  • GP and food cost of sale knowledge,
  • Cleanliness and eye for detail,
  • Team work,
  • Hands on approach with good business acumen

2. Proven Experience/Education Level

  • Previous Head Chef experience managing a team of over 5 is preferred within a branded background in hotels. 
  • Restaurant A La Carte experience is essential
  • College and or University education/qualifications
